    Trek News: UPN Cancels Enterprise
Star Trek UPN and Paramount Network Television jointly announced Feb. 2 that its low-rated Star Trek: Enterprise has been canceled after four seasons. "This will be the final season of Star Trek: Enterprise on UPN," the companies said. The series finale will air on May 13. When Star Trek: Enterprise ends its run, it will mark the first time since 1987 that no new Trek series will appear on the air.

Enterprise becomes the first Trek series to end prematurely since the original Star Trek aired on NBC in the 1960s. All previous Trek spinoff series, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, have completed seven-season runs.¨This year, new executive producer Manny Coto re-energized Enterprise's storylines with episodes that hearkened back to the original series. Last year, the series attempted an ambitious season-long story arc centering on the hunt for the Xindi.

UPN said that the prequel series will have produced a total of 98 episodes. The early cancellation announcement presumably allows producers to write and produce a series finale.

Trek News: Scientists Find Missing Matter
Planets For years, astrophysicists have been boggled by the fact that the grand sum of all the known "normal" matter in the universe -- that which makes up the stars, the Earth and even our own bodies -- only amounts to half of what should exist based on computer simulations.

Given that multiple simulations have continually yielded the same result, they theorized that the rest of the normal matter, known as baryons, must be hiding somewhere in the space between galaxies. However, they haven't had much evidence to support the theory until now.

Misc News: Ex-Beatle To Become Superhero
Beatles Music legend Ringo Starr is teaming up with comics legend Stan Lee to create a new superhero based on the Beatles drummer himself, the Associated Press reported. "Ringo is beloved worldwide for his commitment to people and his singular wit," Lee told the wire service. "Our Ringo superhero character will combine these qualities, along with Ringo's secret powers, which people generally didn't know about because he has kept them secret—until now."

The Ringo character, described as an "evil-battling, Earth-saving—though reluctant—superhero with a great sense of rhythm," will star in an animated series produced by Lee's POW! Entertainment. Production is expected to begin this year, with a DVD planned for release in early 2006, the news service reported. In a statement, the former Beatle said he was excited to become a "reluctant superhero" and that he is looking forward to adding a musical soundtrack to his adventures.

    Trek News: Berman Previews Enterprise
Star Trek Rick Berman, The executive producer of UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise, told SCI FI Wire that upcoming episodes of the show will continue to tap into elements of Star Trek's past, from the original series to Deep Space Nine to the current show. "We're going to touch a little bit on Section 31, which has not been dealt with in a long time," Berman said in an interview. "We're going to touch on certain elements of the Augment experiments that Dr. Soong [Brent Spiner] had done. We'll see the launch of the Columbia, the next starship."

Berman added, "We're also going to deal, on a subtle basis, with the wondrous question of why the Klingons, starting with the first Star Trek film, didn't look quite like the Klingons from the original series. That's 'Affliction' and 'Divergence.' After that we've got 'Bound,' which deals with three Orion slave girls who come aboard Enterprise and wreak a bit of havoc. It's a really fun episode. And after that we have a two-parter dealing with a mirror universe, the same mirror universe that was visited in [the] original series, 100 years in the future, and also on Deep Space Nine, 200 years in the future." UPN has scheduled "Affliction" for Feb. 18 and "Divergence" for Feb. 25. Enterprise airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
